Maria Stella Appointed to Position of Shastri
In a Shambhala News Service message yesterday (October 2, 2012), the Office of the Kalapa Court announced the appointment by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche of thirty-six new shastris—including Victoria Shambhala Centre member Maria Stella!
Serving three-year terms beginning this fall, these shastris join over fifty shastris appointed in the spring and summer of 2010. Among that original group is Victoria’s Rebecca Hazell, now two years into her term.
The position of shastri (literally, “teacher learned in the texts and commentaries”) was created by the Sakyong in 2009. The shastris’ role involves strengthening the vision of enlightened society and supporting local teachers, programs, and meditation students.
The SNS message describes Maria this way:
“Maria Stella, assigned to Victoria, British Columbia, is a psychotherapist and counsellor with a PhD in East-West Psychology. Special interests include trauma healing in individuals, families and communities, and relating with grief, loss and transitions. Originally from Italy, she enjoys living in Canada with her partner.”
In preparation for taking on her new responsibilities, Maria is starting to transition out of some of the many Victoria Shambhala Centre administrative roles she has been filling so effectively and quietly.
Shastri Stella, congratulations, thank you, and every best wish!
