About Us
Our Centre is part of an international community of urban meditation and rural retreat centers founded in 1973 by Tibetan meditation master Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, and now led by his son, Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche. The vision of the Shambhala lineage is based on the wisdom and compassion of the meditation tradition. It proclaims that our lives are workable and even wonderful. Through the path of meditation we can touch our inherent sanity, and by sharing that with others, we can create an enlightened society. The Shambhala community is a support for those who aspire to follow this path.
In the late 1970s, a small group of Chögyam Trungpa's original students moved to Victoria, and established a meditation group and a place for practice and study. Over the years, the community has grown and moved from a few practitioners in a living room to its current location in Victori's long-established Fernwood neighbourhood.
You will find the Centre at #1-2033 Belmont Ave., at the corner of Belmont Ave. and Pembroke S., in the building formerly occupied by the United Church. See the map for details.
We offer regular meditation practice sessions, with opportunities for beginning meditation instruction at our Newcomers' Night throughout the year, there are many opportunities for practice and study, through Shambhala Training weekends, courses through the Shambhala School of Buddhist Studies, and Nalanda Arts such as Ikebana (flower arranging) and Miksang (photography).
