Membership
The Victoria Shambhala Meditation Centre is a non-profit and volunteer-run organization that depends on
your generosity to sustain programs and activities. The centre is
supported primarily by financial contributions from members.
The centre offers free meditation instruction and a place for
meditation practice and study in the Shambhala Buddhist tradition.
Becoming a member is one way to show appreciation for the space
provided at the Centre and for the teachings. Membership is
the act of committing oneself to a path and being willing to serve the
community in a meaningful way.
A member commits in three ways:
Practice and Study
Members of Shambhala have a commitment to ongoing practice and study
through one or more of the three avenues we provide: Buddhist
teachings, Shambhala Training or Nalanda Arts. Each member is assigned
a meditation instructor and is encouraged to communicate with them on
an ongoing basis, for support and guidance.
Volunteering
The Centre is operated entirely through volunteer efforts. Members
and volunteers serve on the governing council, take care of the
day-to-day operation of the Centre, and coordinate and staff programs
and special events. Many skills and talents are needed and one can
serve in a variety of ways.
Financial Support
Members' financial commitments provide the resources to operate the
Centre. Financial contributions go toward rent and other expenses
necessary to keep the Centre in operation, such as utilities, office
supplies and library.
Our suggestion for monthly contributions is $30 per person or $50
per family. From this contribution, $30/year is set aside for
membership dues. The balance is counted as a donation, with a receipt
issued for income tax purposes.
More important than the amount is the regular commitment based on what you can afford.
Supporting our Centre through your generosity as a member ensures
that the Centre continues to exist for the benefit of the community.
To become a member, please look for the application forms in our
Community Room, or go to Contacts to send an email to the Membership
committee.
