Touching the Earth Events

    The Victoria Shambhala Centre’s Touching the Earth group invites you to join in the David Suzuki Foundation’s 30×30 Nature Challenge of spending 30 minutes in nature for 30 days this May. The events outlined below can help you meet the challenge.

    Each event will go ahead rain or shine. Everyone is welcome. RSVP as specified below.

    Thursday, May 2, 7:00 – 8:30 PM: Meet us at the Shambhala Centre’s front doors for a contemplative 3.5 km walk to Government House and back. We’ll have 15 minutes to sit in the Government House gardens before we head back. RSVP to Jennie Sparkes at jennie.sparkes@shaw.ca at least two hours before start time if you plan to participate.

    Thursday, May 9, 7:00 – 8:30 PM: Meet us at the entrance to the Beacon Hill Park Petting Zoo for a contemplative 2 km walk to Finlayson Point and back. We’ll have 15 minutes to sit overlooking Juan de Fuca Strait and the Olympic Mountains before we head back. RSVP to Jennie Sparkes at jennie.sparkes@shaw.ca at least two hours before start time if you plan to participate.

    Saturday, May 11, 12:00 – 2:00 PM: Join us for a stroll along the Oak Bay waterfront and greenspaces starting at the Native Plant Garden across from the Oak Bay Beach Hotel. RSVP to Charles Blackhall at charles108@telus.net at least two hours before start time if you plan to participate.

    Sunday, May 12, 12:00 – 2:00 PM: Join us for a native plant walk at Uplands Park, featuring the beautiful camas in bloom. RSVP to Silas Rosenblatt at silasmail@gmail.com at least two hours before start time if you plan to participate—he’ll tell you where to meet.

    Thursday, May 16, 7:00 – 8:30 PM: Meet us at the Swan Lake Nature House for a 3 km walk around Swan Lake. Bring your camera! Wear footwear suited for trail walking (and slippery boardwalks if it’s wet). Free parking is available at the Nature House. RSVP to Jennie Sparkes at jennie.sparkes@shaw.ca at least two hours before start time if you plan to participate.

    Saturday, May 18, 10 AM – 12:00 PM: Join us for a contemplative colour and texture walk though the University of Victoria rhododendron gardens. Bring your camera! RSVP to John Cowan at mmadventures@shaw.ca at least two hours before start time if you plan to participate—he’ll tell you where to meet.

    Sunday, May 19, 10:00 AM: Enjoy planting veggies and a potluck picnic at Kristina Coleman’s farm on the Saanich Peninsula. Gardening talk and planting starts at 10:00 AM. Space is limited to 12 participants. RSVP to Kristina at kcoleman@axys.com at least two hours before start time if you’d like to participate. Kristina can help arrange carpooling.

    Sunday, May 26, 2:00 – 4:00 PM: Join in Victoria’s 7th annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes fundraiser walk, starting at Centennial Square. This event invites men to walk one mile wearing shoes of their own (or fancy shoes with heels if they choose) to raise funds and awareness for the Victoria Women’s Sexual Assault Centre.

    Monday, May 27 – Sunday, June 2: Get on your bike any way you like for Victoria’s Bike to Work Week 2013. Discover (or rediscover) the our region’s wonderful cycling trails. The Capital Regional District’s Galloping Goose and Lochside Regional Trails brochure (PDF) contains maps and other helpful info.

    Saturday, June 1, 1:00 – 4:00 PM: Meet us under the Mattick’s Farm archway for a 5 km bike ride on Lochside Trail (a designated cycling path) through pastoral countryside to Mitchell’s Farm and back. We’ll have about 15 minutes to sit on the grass at Mitchell’s Farm before we head back (total distance 10 km, no hills). Please bring water, sunscreen, a cycling helmet, and a blanket to sit on, and be sure your bike is in good repair. RSVP to Jennie Sparkes at jennie.sparkes@shaw.ca at least two hours before start time if you plan to participate.
