What is Sadhana Practice? A Study Group

with Shastri Mark Hazell & Shastri Rebecca Hazell

May 1st—June 19th (2018)

    Room: 2nd Floor Meditation Hall

Have you ever, while taking part in the group practice of either the Shambhala Sadhana or The Sadhana of Mahamudra, wondered exactly what it is that you were doing? If you’re like most people, the answer to that question is very likely an emphatic YES! If so, I’d like to invite you to join me in digging into that question. We will read and contemplate several different texts, watch at least one video, take turns offering presentations on the material we study, and enjoy each other’s company. We will also practice both sadhanas several times.

There is no fee for participating in the study group, but there will be a cost for materials. We will be primarily studying The Sadhana of Mahamudra Resouces for Study, which I will have to order from the Nalanda Translation committee ($30), supplemented by a selection of short excerpts from some of Trungpa Rinpoche’s other books. For those who would like to go deeper, Devotion & Crazy Wisdom by Trungpa Rinpoche is particularly recommended ($35). Creation and Completion – Essential Points of Tantric Meditation by Jamgon Kongtrul (translated and introduced by Sarah Harding and including a wonderful commentary by Thrangu Rinpoche) will provide further insight.

If you are interested in participating in this study group, please register as soon as possible. It takes about 10 days to get the Resources for Study from the Translation Committee in Halifax and if at all possible I would like to order these before the study group starts.

There are two prerequisites for joining this study group: First, that you have received meditation instruction from a Shambhala instructor and have some personal experience of practicing following those instructions; and second, that you will make a commitment to doing the readings and participating in the study group to the best of your ability.
